In Service Training (INSET)
Further to the successful, "Introduction to Citizenship - Secondary" days, the Institute for Citizenship ran a programme over three days focussing on citizenship education in more depth.
Participants did not need to attend all three days as they covered discrete areas, and they could attend them in any order.
The three days were held at Regent's College, central London in January 2003 and then repeated in July 2003.
Content
- The Managing Citizenship day covered delivery, documentation, managing a department, whole school issues and assessment.
- The Political Literacy day included elections, economic citizenship and Europe. We looked at the context in which citizenship learning takes place and considered resources.
- The Active Citizenship day covered teaching methods required for active learning, community partnerships, school councils and how to assess active citizenship.
Accredited citizenship course at the Institute of Education
The Institute for Citizenship also ran an accredited citizenship course at the Institute of Education in March 2003. Over four separate days, this course focussed on designing developing and delivering a programme of citizenship in schools. In addition to the four sessions the participants also carried out a piece of school based research.
The course counted as 20 credits towards a Certificate and Advanced Diploma in Professional Studies. It was also possible for this unit to be transferred to count towards an MA.
