Aims

Section Summary

Section 1

Disability

To look beyond the immediate disability and identify similarities.

To consider what it might be like to be visually impaired or to use a wheelchair.

Pupils will:

  • explore what it is like to be disabled. It is likely that members of the class will have disabilities - a sensitive approach will enable pupils to consider either their own or others' disabilities. A visitor may support and reinforce the work

Section 2

Different faiths and cultures

To develop an understanding of a specific religion or culture (this activity can be used as a model for a range of religions and cultures).

Pupils will:

  • take part in games, role-plays and activities to illustrate our similarities but also that everyone is special and unique
  • host a visit by a member of a chosen religion or culture

Section 3

The four nations of the United Kingdom

To identify the names and gain some background knowledge of the four nations that make up the UK - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

To consider similarities in the daily experiences and life of the pupils and children from the other nations to ensure pupils do not develop a stereotypical view.

To find out more about the traditions and creative cultures of the four nations.

Pupils will:

  • take part in games to teach new words and meanings with which they will need to become familiar
  • experience a presentation by friends/community visitors about their personal memories and experiences of living in one of the four nations
  • take part in traditional food making and tasting
  • explore/play traditional instruments and listen to/learn traditional songs
  • try on traditional dress
  • watch or try out traditional dancing
  • watch or take part in sensory stories, rewritten to teach and explain traditional tales
