Active Citizenship

ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP TODAY TRAINING PROGRAMMES

ACT! Programmes

Working together with young people, youth organisations, community groups, local authorities and schools,
the Institute for Citizenship has developed a series of active citizenship programmes. Using an integrated
approach that links formal and informal education, the programmes and resources outlined below will enable
schools and organisations working with young people to respond effectively to key stages 3 and 4 of the
National Curriculum. All of the services are aimed at 11 - 18 year olds and include a range of interesting and
participatory activities backed up with informative resource materials, with set learning outcomes that link
to the curriculum.

1. An Introduction to Active Citizenship

This service will introduce the concepts around active citizenship and participation.
The ACT! team will work with groups of young people through issues such as:

  • Rules and laws
  • Leadership and group work
  • Barriers to active participation
  • Degrees of participation
  • Rights and responsibilities

2. ACT! Pack: 1 - 3 Day Workshops

This range of services will support the delivery of theme or issue-based workshops that can be run in schools
or youth groups, in a one day session or over several days.

The ACT! team will work with a group of young people to raise awareness of particular themes or issues,
and address how these link to their communities and how they can become actively involved as citizens.
This service also includes the design of a pack relating to the particular theme or issue required, linking in
with the concepts of active participation and citizenship. This pack will include all the facilitator's notes
and young people's handouts used in the workshops.

3. Active Participation: Action Groups

A series of set sessions (1 hour 30 minutes - 2 hours per week) delivered over a 1 - 2 term period.
During these sessions, the ACT! team will work with young people to develop active citizenship groups,
looking at the issues that are important to them in and around their community and looking at ways to
make an impact and effect change.
