Britton, F (2000), Active Citizenship - A Teaching Toolkit, Hodder & Stoughton
- This resource offers teachers and schools a flexible framework to introduce Citizenship education in
key stages 3 and 4. This toolkit provides a sequence of lesson plans based on five competencies, each containing a number of practical activities and techniques. The book also contains a student guide in the middle, which can be photocopied and used by participants to accompany the activities and tasks.

- A three-part book looking at approaches to setting up and running young people's peer-education projects. The parts are for Project profiles, Ways and means and A toolkit.
Buckley, J, Garner, S & Turner. D (2001), Facilitating Young Person Led Community Action, Changemakers
- This guide aims to encourage practitioners to pursue the Changemakers' facilitative approach to learning in the community. It offers a structured approach to the process and contains ideas, suggestions and activities to facilitate the process from initial presentation of the programme to celebrating the learning achieved and moving on.

- A resource aimed at assisting the teaching of life skills for key stage 3 pupils. These life skills will be developed through activities, that promote creative thinking, emotional literacy, creative conflict resolution and Active Citizenship. The resource has three modules: Connecting yourself; Connecting with others; Connecting with the community.

- This toolkit aims to provide a practical and positive contribution to schools by offering advice on how to set up school councils and guidance on how to make democratic structures within schools effective.

- Get Global puts forward a model/methodology on how to facilitate and assess active global Citizenship in the classroom. The book promotes a skill-based approach rather than a content-based approach, which can be used within different subject areas and with all ages.
Hayward, J (2002), Active Citizenship: Get Involved, BBC/Institute for Citizenship
- The BBC book and accompanying video support 11-16 year olds in developing skills for Active Citizenship. The pack contains teachers' notes, photocopiable activity sheets, evaluation and assessment sheets and a video, all of which focus on Active Citizenship projects being carried out in schools for peer training, raising awareness about crime and fair trade.

- This Handbook is a comprehensively updated edition of the Activate! Teacher Starter File for key stages 3 and 4 (2001). Designed as a key reference tool for Citizenship co-ordinators, it draws on a wealth of experience to provide a solid foundation for the effective delivery of Citizenship in secondary schools. - This resource is aimed at professionals and organisations that work with children and young people in a range of settings. It looks at the importance and benefits of empowerment for young people and professionals. It examines the different barriers to empowerment and the need for workers and organisations to understand their own intentions before starting out on a process of involving young people in decision-making.

Francis, G (2002), Giving Children and Young People a Voice: Participation and Active Citizenship (draft), National Children's Bureau
- This draft paper puts forward a definition of participation, identifies the underlying principles and makes suggestions for best practice in schools. Participation is described as being, "when children and young
people are involved in decisions that affect their lives".
Nelson, J (2002), Evaluation of Post-16 Citizenship Development Projects: Draft Annual Report, Learning Skills Development Agency / DfES
- The Learning Skills Development Agency has been commissioned by the DfES to establish and manage a development programme for post-16 Citizenship. The LSDA selected 11 projects to run over a two-year period from September 2001 and ten new projects have been selected for 2002-2004.
Stenton, S (in progress), Active Citizens in Schools (ACIS), Changemakers
- A national pilot programme is now underway in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire run by Changemakers and funded by the DfES called Active Citizens in Schools (ACIS). The programme covers key stages 3 and 4 and aims to engage young people as active citizens, involving them in the community through volunteering opportunities, encouraging better links between schools and community, and reinforcing the new Citizenship curriculum.
