How to Use The Training Manual
The training manual is designed to assist you in working with young people through a Cycle of Change, which will result in practical experiences of active citizenship.
The Cycle of Change has five phases and each phase makes up an individual chapter in the training manual that includes a theme, a series of activities with set learning outcomes and links to key stages 3 and 4 of the national curriculum for citizenship.
The resource has been designed to be used either as a stand-alone unit to assist in the development of an active citizenship project via the Cycle of Change or to be dipped into for individual sessions.
The training manual also includes a chapter of icebreaker activities that can be used for an introductory session before moving onto Phase 1 of the Cycle of Change or prior to individual sessions to warm the group up before
moving on to some of the more complex activities.
The workshop activities in this resource have been designed so that you can 'pick and mix' those that are most relevant to your group or project. The aim is to be as flexible as possible during the project and it is not
compulsory that you use all of the activities in each section. Most of the activities could be fitted into a
45-60 minute slot or lesson. This allows facilitators to split the activities over two or more sessions or
'pick and mix' elements of the activities that would be most suitable for a session.
Each activity consists of clear and concise facilitator instructions and, in some cases, includes photocopiable worksheets and handouts for the young people.
