Young Citizens’ Action Agenda Project including a Young Citizens’ Action Event

What the project will deliver:

The project aims

  • It is hoped that the six-month project will help raise the general awareness among young people in London (and later the UK) of the importance of politics and participation and get them thinking about what they can do to build a better world.
  • The aims are to make a practical contribution to students and youth groups by
    • increasing understanding of politics and money matters
    • promoting participation
    • helping young people to develop speaking and listening skills
    • encouraging social cohesion
    • and, by showing what they can do, helping society to see young people in a more positive light.

The Event on afternoon of July 10th

  • The Young Citizens' Action Event page
  • Groundbreaking political / media information event for up to 2,000 students from London Boroughs at Central Hall during the afternoon of July 10th
  • Students will see three BBC films (Why Politics Matters, Why the Economy Matters, Why Citizenship Matters).

  • Up to 2,000 young Londoners will then stay on to form the audience of an evening BBC Schools Question Time programme with young Londoners asking the questions.

Post-event work and practical outcomes

  • Young Citizens’ Panels (for London and the UK) will be set up to work on Action Agendas outlining what young people can do to build a better world
  • The Young Citizens’ Action Agendas for the Prime Minister and the Mayor of London will be delivered in October 2008 and the Institute will develop ways of taking the work forward.
