FREE Citizenship Resources - Getting Young Citizens Involved in Current Affairs

Dear Teacher

Young Citizens’ Action Agenda 2008

The Institute for Citizenship (IfC) and its partners launched the Young Citizens’ Action Agenda campaign in July 2008 with the Young Citizens’ Action Event in London for 1,500 students.

The campaign aims to:

Give young citizens the knowledge, skills and voice to explore solutions for 21st century   challenges

         Promote participation and active citizenship

Help society to see young people in a more positive light.

We need your help – Your students can take part in the campaign

We are currently working with 24 young citizens on the YCAA panels to produce Action Agendas to present to the Prime Minister and the Mayor of London at the end of November 2008. The Agendas will focus on two important points:

 ·       How the Government and regional and local authorities can help young people

·       How young people can help themselves and Government tackle 21st century challenges.

The YCAA Panels would like to consult with young people between 14 – 18 years old across the UK. From our initial research, working directly with over 2,000 young people, the panels have drafted 14 key points that they think affect young people in the UK. Now they would like the views of other young people on these issues.

FREE Citizenship Resources

To make it easier for other students to take part, the Institute for Citizenship has designed Lesson Plans and Resource Sheets that complement the current Citizenship curriculum and can help introduce young people to political petitions and campaigns. The aim of the YCAA campaign is to show young people that their voice counts and that through their Citizenship classes they can have their opinions heard and counted.

We have created two lesson plans to allow for different time allowances. The lesson plans have clear instructions and all feedback is done via the internet (this can be completed by you or an elected pupil).

To make the YCAA campaign as representative as possible all the ideas and opinions created in your Citizenship lessons can be registered at: www.citizen.org.uk/youngcitizens/getinvolved.html

Please see the attached Citizenship Resources and YCAA Consultation PDF for more information.

Consultation Website Closes: Tuesday 18th November 2008

We are particularly grateful to all those Citizenship teachers who are able to incorporate the YCAA campaign into their lessons and get their students involved in democratic debate that will help produce Young Citizens’ Action Agendas for the Prime Minister and Mayor of London.

Yours sincerely,
